![]() He feels bad that he cannot provide better for his family. He’s struggling to pay his many credit card bills, in fact. ![]() Unlike his daughter’s friend’s family, he has a rundown house and no lawn ornaments whatsoever, especially no costly SGs. He cannot even afford to give her the birthday present she wants, which is quite pricey. He is not as well off as his neighbors, not as well off as his daughter’s best friend’s family, who are very rich and have everything. Our narrator here is a home owner, a family man, who is keeping a diary for future generations so they can see how life was really lived. The SGs are strung together with a thread through the brain (which can be removed without harm) which leaves them docile, swinging from a ‘microline’ in long flowing white dresses in the front yard. ![]() Take the longest story, “The Semplica Girl Diaries”: SGs, we learn, are lovely ethnic women used by homeowners to decorate their lawns. The absurdist elements are here, as always, though tampered down some, and the satirical humor runs high, as always, but now we have a more empathetic overtone. There is a new dimension to Tenth of December, which sneaks up on you and takes hold. ![]() Don’t be afraid of the hype this third collection by George Saunders lives up to it. ![]()

You can easily mix them up by hand so you can whip up a batch whenever you get a craving. I think any nut oil, like almond or hazelnut, would give these cookies a nice flavor so feel free to play around. I also opted to use safflower oil instead of canola for the remainder. Saying that, Devolution isn’t concerned with a viral pandemic, but it does share the ‘world in collapse’ concept that we’re growing more familiar with as 2020 rolls on. For many of us, Covid-19 has been the ultimate awakening moment, and it’s just the sort of frightening situation that has allowed Max Brooks to worm his way into our affections once more. Is it any wonder that those of us who get stuck in this circle of modern life look for so many opportunities to make it all just a little bit easier? To escape and not consider the many terrible things that could sunder our cushy existence in a heartbeat. And what’s more, I’ve discovered that cupboards don’t fill themselves! Those odd jobs and not so odd bills are ten times more draining on your soul when it’s only you responsible for them. Since reading Max Brooks’ terrific World War Z, I’ve since acquired a house of my own and personally experienced those challenges associated with rebuilding a life in the face of adversity. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() VERY GOOD+/-FINE CONDITION, with the usual surface wear & slight rubbing to covers from book being handled, read and stored. A man named Ghandi is coming to power, talking about nonviolence and independence from Britain. While her father has been at war, Rosalind sees the country slowly change. Rosalind is kept from boarding school in England at her mother’s insistence. It is India, 1918, six months after the end of World War I, and Rosalind awaits the return of her father from the war.
